Tony Kitara, a lawyer in Gulu City in the race to contest for the National Resistance Movement Party flag for Laroo-Pece Division MP seat and NRM newly elected executive from Agonga ward in Pece-Laroo Division, Gulu City, has petitioned the NRM Chairperson Electoral Commission following the scheduled NRM executive committee elections on Monday, May 19th, 2025.
According to his letter dated, 16 May 2025, Counsel Kitara argues that the planned elections will contravene the provision of article 17 (4) and (5) of the constitution of the NRM party since the chairperson of the committee shall be the NRM member of parliament of the constituency or NRM candidate in the preceding elections.
The petitioner further stated that in his opinion, the said Executive Committee can only be constituted after conducting primary elections and the National Elections, where is the stage for both the NRM members of parliament or NRM candidates.
Tonny Kitara then concluded that proceeding with the elections shall be ultra vires and unconstitutional in his legal opinion.
By press time, the petition had been received by the NRM Directorate of Legal Services at the NRM head office in Kampala.
Dr. Tanga Odoi, the NRM Chairperson Electoral Commissioner, when contacted, said the Legal Department shall reply since the petitioner did put it in black and white.
“Since it is written in English, our law firm shall reply in English”. Dr Tanga Odio noted
