President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has ordered the arrest of individuals accused of tampering with results in the just-concluded National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries, as the ruling party grapples with growing concerns over internal electoral fraud and misconduct.
In a statement released on Monday, the President condemned what he called “polluting” of the party’s primary elections held on July 17, 2025, by self-seekers and vote riggers who he said are tarnishing the legacy of the NRM.
“The state agencies have started the necessary anti-crime actions against the self-seekers,” Museveni stated. “They are starting with the clear cases of the idiots alleged to have altered the results in the tallying.”
At least eight people have been arrested from Mayuge, Buyende, Kapchorwa, Pader, Oyam, Rwampara, Kareenga, and Mbarara in connection with altering primary election results. The President warned that other suspects involved in violence, bribery, and voter register interference are also being pursued.
The NRM primaries on July 17 were aimed at selecting party flag bearers for the 2026 general elections. However, the process was marred by widespread reports of electoral malpractice, including change of registers , result alteration, bribery, and voter intimidation, prompting nationwide outcry from party members and candidates alike.
Museveni, the NRM’s national chairman, assured party loyalists and the public that a full cleanup was underway. He announced the formation of a committee of “powerful lawyers” to handle election petitions and promised to restore integrity in the party’s internal electoral processes.
“This is a heritage of martyrs and heroes,” he emphasized. “We shall clean up the NRM as we also defend the wider interests of all Ugandans.”
The President urged the public to provide evidence of malpractice to aid in investigations, reaffirming his commitment to uphold the party’s core values of discipline, democracy, and justice.
