The Office of the Commissioner for Refugees in Uganda has asked scholars and researchers, both locally and internationally to be very mindful of ethical considerations while doing research on Refugees.
“The Office of the Prime Minister puts emphasis on ethical issues in refugee research. There is a need, therefore, for adaptable approaches to research with refugee populations that challenge strict compliance with the traditional principles of do no harm” he emphasizes.
Titus Jogo, the Refugee Desk Officer in Office of the Prime Minister Adjumani district who represented the Commissioner for Refugees, Douglas Asiimwe was speaking during the Building Stronger Universities-BSU phase 4 project launch on Tuesday 4th June 2024 at the University New Library.
He also called upon the university to give more support to refugees, especially in the areas of research on refugee operations and forced migration studies.
“Co-produced research with displaced people can lead to new ways of understanding, and contribute to more democratic and inclusive research production. Demographic studies of migration often consider issues such as migration health, welfare, employment, and education in relation to non-migrant population” Jogo said.
Mr. Jogo appreciated Gulu University under the BSU project for supporting the refugees in the areas of youth reproductive health.
The Danish Ambassador to Uganda H.E Signe Winding Albjerg commended the different universities for the commitment and strong partnerships and collaborations that saw the previous BSU project phases successful including the phase 4 launch.
She advised researchers at Gulu University to take interest and do research on all Danish interventions in Uganda.
Prof. Openjuru George Ladaah, the Gulu University Vice-Chancellor thanked the Danish Government for the trust in Gulu University yet again for another project phase.
He added that management that he heads is up to the task to see that the project succeeds and becomes a benchmarking point for many universities on grants management and a clear-cut success story for replication by other institutions.
The Gulu University Secretary Mr. Obol David Otori described the relationship between the university administration and BSU project team as perfect and pledged continuous support to the project to see it successful.
