Gulu, Uganda — The Northern Uganda Media Club (NUMEC) has elected new board leadership to strengthen governance and guide the organisation through a major institutional transition.
At its inaugural board meeting, Chowoo Willy was elected Chairperson of the Board, with Felista Auma as Vice Chairperson.
Willy, a media entrepreneur with experience in radio, investigative reporting, data journalism, and digital media, is expected to steer the organisation through a rapidly changing media landscape. Auma, a public relations practitioner, brings expertise in gender, corporate governance, and institutional development.
Other board appointments include Justine Muboka as Chairperson of the Programs Committee, Jimmy Komakech as Chairperson of the Finance Committee, and Innocent Aloyo as Deputy Chairperson of the Finance Committee.
Speaking after his election, Willy emphasised the need for strong governance, saying the board will focus on delivering measurable impact while ensuring the organisation remains responsive to emerging media trends.
In the same meeting, the board appointed Alfred Oryem as Acting Executive Director for six months, marking the first time NUMEC has had a dedicated executive head.
The appointment signals a shift from a club-based structure to a formal NGO governance model. Oryem, who previously served as Project Coordinator, said he aims to position NUMEC as a key player in building a resilient media sector amid digital disruption and shrinking civic space.
The leadership changes mark a new phase of institutional growth for NUMEC, which remains committed to promoting press freedom, strengthening public-interest journalism, and amplifying community voices in Northern Uganda.
